MP: Seven years imprisonment for eating beef

Bhopal, Jan 3: Eating, keeping or transporting Beef could invite punishment upto seven years in Madhya Pradesh.

On Dec 22, the long-pending Cow Progeny Slaughter Prevention (Amendment) Bill received President Pratibha Patil's approval.

BJP showed its dissent for the existing legislation as it provided only three-year jail term for the cow slaughters. The state government had passed the amendment bill in July 2010 to remove the flaws in the Madhya Pradesh Gauvansh Pratishedh Adhiniyam 2004 (Madhya Pradesh Cow Progeny Slaughter Prevention Regulation).

According to the new provision, the authorities can punish the transporters, their employees and drivers with jail terms from six months to three years.
