Fun boat ride at Pulicat Lake,Chennai turns tragic; 22 dead

Chennai, Dec 26: It was a sad Christmas Day for people in Chennai when a fun boat ride at the Pulicat Lake near Chennai on Sunday turned tragic. The lake is located 60 kms away from Chennai at Tiruvallur district. Close to 22 people are feared dead when the boat they were traveling in capsized. People in the area cited that there were a total of 25 people in the boat with some of them rescued.

The victims were from different parts of Chennai with initial reports suggesting that the boats were operated by local fishermen. The rescue operations are underway with the services of two coast guard shifts pressed into action to fish out the dead bodies from the lake. Local fishermen, fire and rescue divers are also joining in the efforts.

Police have stated that the boat caught in waves leading to the tragedy. They also added that the area was banned for boating.

Those rescued are being treated for trauma following the tragic incident.
