Sabarimala purified after woman enters sanctum

Sabarimala
Sabarimala, Dec 20: A purification process was performed at the Lord Ayyappa temple, Sabarimala, Kerala on Monday, Dec 19 after a 35-year-old woman violated the norms by entering the shrine.

The ceremony was performed at the santcum, 18 sacred steps that leads to the main temple, said the sanctorum temple administration officials.

The purification process was led by the Temple priest, said Travancore Devaswom Board officials.

The woman identified as Saraswathi, who hails from Andhra Pradesh climbed up 18 steps to enter the temple complex and offered her prayers in front of the deity. She was spotted by the Rapid Action Force personnel while she was moving around in the temple premises. She was later handed over to the police and let go off with no case registered against her.

In 2006, Kannada actress Jayamala entered the temple and claimed to have touched the deity violating the law. She, however, said that she was pushed into the temple by the surging crowd.

A case was registered against the actress for violating the law.
