Who is BJP's nightmare Sriramulu?

Bangalore, Dec 4: B Sriramulu, former Health Minister of Karnataka, who contested as an independent candidate, won the Bellary by-poll elections on Dec 4. Sunday.

Sriramulu was born on Aug 8, 1971 in Bellary.

'Ramulu Anna" as he is fondly called, completed his schooling from Bellary and later pursued Bachelor of Arts from Veera Shaiva College, Bellary.

Sriramulu started off his career as a business man and and later forayed into business with Ennobel Finance India Ltd. He owes the gratitude to Subhash Chandra Bose, Chandra Sekhar Azad, Swamy Vivekananda, who he said inspired him to a great extent to do good work.

Sriramulu's stint with politics began in the year 1996, after he was elected as a councillor from Devi Nagar. The Minister also contributed a lot to social services and believes in the welfare of people.

He rose to fame after he became a close aide to BJP leader Sushma Swaraj who contested against Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the 1999 Assembly elections from Bellary. He worked tirelessly under Sushma Swaraj's guidence to establish BJPs strong hold in the state and is also referred to as Sushma Swaraj's "adopted son".

Before becoming the Health Minister in 2008, he also served as the Textile Minister, Civil Aviation Minister and Health and Family Welfare Minister.

During his tenure as Health Minister, he faced strong criticism from opposition during the H1N1 outbreak in the state for not reacting to people's suffering.

Sreeramulu quit BJP on Nov 9 in order to contest as an independent candidate. His victory in the Bellary (Rural) Assembly constituency by-election with a wide margin of over 46,000 votes has jolted the BJP government and it would be worth waiting to watch how Sriramulu's victory would act as a trump card for Janardhana Reddy, who is currenlty lodged at Hyderabad prison and who Sreeramulu is a close aide to, after the BJP distanced themselves from the mining czars for their alleged involvement in the illegal mining scam.
