'Dam'n it, another dam-protest erupts in Assam

Guwahati, Dec 1: Thousands of people staged a massive roadblock on the National Highway (NH)-52 on Thursday (Nov 30) night in Lakhimpur district of Assam to prevent the trucks carrying big dam turbines from heading towards Gerukamukh, where the construction of Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project (LSHEP) has been going on.

The protesters led by KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi blocked the national highway defying security barricade to stop the movement of the trucks after it left Dholpur after a massive police-protester clash which left about 80 people injured.

AASU, AJYCP, TMPK have also joined the protest, as reported by a source. Meanwhile, injured are given treatment in Lakhimpur civil hospital. Notably, the protest also resulted injuries to many of the AASU leaders and several of them have been hospitalised.

Meanwhile, the main opposition party in Assam, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has condemned the police actions on the agitating people terming as anti-democratic acts. The latest developments have exposed the anti-people nature of the Government. The Government has sided with the big-capitalists. AGP spokesperson Atul Bora said that the AGP has extended its full support to the ongoing agitation against the mega dam projects.
