Online superstar, Russian Prez gets 1mn fans in a day

Moscow, Nov 11: This is a unique distinction that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was least expecting. Medvedev has managed to achieve the impossible when he gained a whopping one million followers within 24 hours on the popular social networking site Vkontakte.

The Russian Prez created his profile on Wednesday on the popular networking site Vkontakte after talks with popular Russian bloggers. The profile says that Medvedev's interests are "work, family, sports, internet" and his favourite music is "hard-rock, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, classical."

There are glimpses of Medvedev's personal life in the albums on the site that shows his everyday life as president. His latest post on Vkontakte says, "Thank you for your attention and gifts! Getting used to Vkontakte's style. Good night, everybody!" This post alone garnered a whopping 17,000 likes in less than a day.

Russia's popular social networking site, Vkontakte has a userbase of 100 million and is known for its pirate music and video content that is available for downloading. Unlike most other world leaders, Medvedev is highly tech savvy who has an account with Twitter, Youtube and Facebook. He also has a blog on LiveJournal. He is not only popular back home, he has close to 300,000 followers for his Facebook page.

Medvedev opened his Twitter account in Jun 2010 following his visit to the Silicon Valley. There are close to 134,000 followers for MedvedevRussia while another 660,000 people are following the Prez on MedvedevRussiaE, the English version.
