Open bank account with other states' identity proof

New Delhi, Nov 8: The government has directed all banks to consider identity proofs issued in other states as valid documents for opening a no-frills bank account. The latest recommendation from the Finance Ministry will definitely help thousands of migrant workers to access banking services.

The Finance Ministry has asked all private and public banks to accept identity proofs and use their branch network in other states to verify the authenticity of the documents.

With this direction, from now onwards, domestic helps and drivers can use a voter identity card or NREGA job card to open a bank account in capital bank's.

Meanwhile, bankers said that accepting other states' identity proofs are very difficult to conduct the verification in opening a bank account. But as part of the financial inclusion agenda, being pushed by the government as well as RBI, banks have been given flexibility in opening accounts and transacting business accepting other states' identity proof.
