BPL families to get Re 1/kg rice in Andhra

This announcement was made in a meeting held in Tirupati. It is expected that around 2.26 crore families would be benefited by the new scheme. The additional burden for the State Government by reducing from Rs.2/- to Re.1/- will be Rs.600/- per year.
In fact, this scheme is being considered as a crucial attempt to divert public attention from the ongoing strike by various parties in Telangana for a separate state. Apart from AP, Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been offering this scheme for the poor.
The RS 2 kg rice scheme was introduced by by Telegu Desham Party founder NT Rama Rao during early 1980s.
