Anna Hazare: Complete text of PM's statement in Parliament

New Delhi, Aug 17: With Prime Minister Manmohan Singh deciding to speak following Opposition pressure on the government's move to arrest Gandhian Anna Hazare, the after effects of his speech were not exactly pleasant. The PM still justified the government's stand on the situations that led to Hazare's arrest citing law and order issues. He stated that the Parliament was supreme and no others could frame laws.

With the PM's statement in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha causing a huge furore, various members in the House lambasted the PM and the UPA on its attitude. Opposition leader of the BJP in the Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley commented in the floor of the House, "Do you even recollect from British regime when these kinds of restrictions were imposed on freedom fighters and Gandhiji...you cannot impose such unnecessary conditions."
