SC asks Jaya to implement Samacheer Kalvi within 10 days

Chennai, Aug 9: In a major setback to Jayalalithha-led AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court directed the state to implement uniform education system (Samacheer Kalvi) introduced by the previous DMK government.

SC ordered the Tamil Nadu government to implement the uniform education system in the state within ten days. Earlier, SC had dismissed the state's plea that the Uniform System of School Education (Amendment) Act brought into force by the DMK government was sub-standard, lacked quality and was politically motivated.

Assuming the power after a landslide victory in 2011 Assembly Elections, Jayalalithaa passed an amendment to the act against the Samacheer Kalvi saying that it was introduced only to promote the political agendas of DMK party and then Karunanidhi led government.

AIADMK government alleged that the Uniform System of School Education till class X passed by DMK government was not up to the standard and some of the texts have controversial chapters.
