Revenge on Hubby: Wife abused in front of kids, kills self

New Delhi, Aug 2: 33-year-old Harpreet Kaur in Chandigarh committed suicide after allegedly being harassed by her alcoholic husband. Harpreet alias Preet reportedly decided to kill herself after she was abused in front of her three children.

Police arrested the accused and Preet's father-in-law under sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. Preet husband is reportedly a taxi driver and father-in-law is a retired government official.

However, the parents of the deceased claimed that Preet's husband and in-laws had murdered her (Preet) and then hanged her dead body from the ceiling.

Dismissing the murder charges, the investigating police officials said that Preet committed suicide as she had been facing harassment from her husband since the time they got married in 1996.

Meanwhile, the victim's mother informed, "Preet began facing harassment three years after her marriage and had filed a complaint against Gurmeet at Bassi Pathana police station in 2001, but a compromise was reached. He continued to abuse and assault my daughter nearly every day."
