CPI (M) moves Madras HC for directive for civic polls

Puducherry, Jul 30: CPI(M)'s Puducherry unit has moved the Madras High Court for giving a directive to the Union Territory Administration to fill the vacancy of state Election Commissioner and to hold civic polls.

A PIL was filed in this regard as the territorial administration was delaying civic polls and posted special officers to man municipal bodies here, CPI(M) Puducherry unit secretary V Perumal said in a release here.

The tenure of the civic bodies ended earlier this month. There are five municipalities spread over Puducherry (two) Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam (one each) and 10 commune panchayats (five each in Puducherry and Karaikal) and 98 village panchayats) in the union territory.
