Dey murder case: MCOCA slapped against eight accused

Mumbai, Jul 8: The Mumbai Police on Friday, Jul 8 invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against the eight accused, arrested in connection with the assassination of Senior Investigative reporter Jyotirmoy Dey.

According to police, MCOCA provisions can be applied, if two crime gang members have at least two charge sheets registered against them.

Vinod Asrani alias Vinod Chembur, who allegedly helped the shooters identify Dey is one among the 8 accused in the case. Asrani was arrested on July 3 and a local court on Thursday had extended his police custody till July 13.

Last week, police arrested gunman Rohee Thangappan Joseph alias Satish Kalya, 34 and his associates Abhijeet Shinde, 28, Arun Dake, 27, Sachin Gaikwad, 27, Anil Waghmode, 35, Nilesh Shendge, 34 and Mangesh Agawane, 25, for Dey's murder.

The police claims that Dey was killed at the behest of Gangster Chhota Rajan who allegedly paid Rs.5 lakh to the accused for the killing.
