AIADMK sympathiser dies in stampede after lathicharge

Salem, Apr 13: A 58-year-old AIADMK sympathiser died in a stampede today (Apr 13) following a police lathicharge to disperse a crowd around a polling booth in Veerapandi constituency here.

Y Chinnathambi was declared to have died on the spot by members of the 108 Emergency Rescue Service following the lathicharge at the Panangadu polling booth, his wife Chinnathayi said.

After the incident, AIADMK sympathisers resorted to a roadblock of Sivathapuram main road. They also damaged police vehicles by pelting stones, officials said.

Shortly after the incident, AIADMK MP Semmalai and ADMK candidate for Veerapandi constituency, Selvaraj, arrived at the scene and spoke with DSP Anitha.
