Dehra Dun, Apr 4: Tehri Congress MLA Kishore Upadhyay ended his indefinite fast on its fourteenth day today after talks with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, who accepted most of his demands concerning the development of his constituency.

Nishank and PCC chief Yashpal Arya held hour-long talks with Upadhyay this morning, assuring him amicable resolution on his 25 demands, after which he ended his indefinite fast.

"We are glad to announce that Kishore ji has broken his fast after getting positive assurance from the Chief Minister.

Nearly 70 to 75 per cent of his demands have been accepted by the Chief Minister," Arya told PTI.

Among the main contentious issues, the Chief Minister has agreed to set up a new forestry or agriculture university at Ranichauri area of Tehri district, he said.

The CM also agreed to promote tourism in and around the Tehri dam reservoir. The Tehri primary health centre would be upgraded and a new inter college will be set up in Tehri district, Arya said, adding, the Chamba Nagar Parishad would be given the status of Nagar Panchayat if it meets the standards.

Regarding the remaining 25-30 per cent demands, the Chief Minister said he would take a view on them in due course of time, Arya said.

The Congress had been putting pressure on Nishank to accept Upadhyay's demands.

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi had sent his emissary Bhanwar Jitendra Singh to meet the fasting MLA at Chamba town in Garhwal region on April 1.

Union Minister of State for Agriculture Harish Rawat last week met the Chief Minister and urged him to accept the demands of Upadhyay, who had earlier threatened that he would not not drink water despite deterioration of his health.

Upadhyay, who was forcefully shifted to the government Doon hospital here March 25 after he developed weakness and kidney troubles, had later shifted his base to Chamba, a town in Tehri district which is part of his constituency.

A host of social activists including Chipko movement leader Sunderlal Bahuguna, recipient of Padam Vibhushan, are supporting Upadhyay's cause.
