CARE honours the super-women of today's times

New Delhi, March 8: It was a celebration of womanhood at the 'Stree Shakti" Awards institutionalized by CARE India, as part of the International Women"s Day celebrations. CARE has been pro-active in empowering women for 60 years in India and recognized the outstanding achievements of women in different fields on the occasion of 100th International Women"s Day.

Among those recognized are Reena Kaushal Dharmshaktu (Woman mountaineer), Deepa Malik ( international paraplegic sports person) and Tania Sachdev ( Woman Grandmaster). A couple of rural women were also lauded for their efforts in the betterment of society.

A day extravaganza Main Shakti Hoon" (I am Powerful) was also organized that was an occassion for women to gather and enjoy themselves. With cultural events, dance and music, the event also saw performances by contemporary fusion band Indian Ocean and dance recital by Sadhya troupe. Thousands of women from Delhi thronged to celebrate womanhood.

The awards were presented by well-known poet Dr Anamika at Dilli Haat and one of the winners Deepa Malik's story was an inspiration in itself for women around the world.

Among those who got special mention was Govinda Amma and Usha of Tamil Nadu, who struck back at life with a vengeance after Tsunami made a devastating effect on their life. They got togeather with the support of CARE to make a living, this bringing about a powerful change in their lives as well as others.
