Lawyers lathi-charged in UP

Lucknow, Feb 25 (PTI) Some lawyers were todaylathi-charged while marching "peacefully" towards ChiefMinister Mayawati''s residence to hand over a memorandum oftheir demands.

The incident took place this afternoon when a number oflawyers were trying to march towards the CM''s residence andwere stopped at Hazratganj crossing by the police.

While some lawyers started stone pelting, police resortedto lathi-charge, injuring a number of them.

Lawyers said that they were peeved at the state budgetin which no arrangements were made for their welfare schemes.

"We wanted to handover the memorandum to press ourdemands incluing provision in state budget for their welfare,"a lawyer said, adding that their march was peaceful but policeunnecessarily resorted to lathi-charge on them.

The injured lawyers were admitted to hospital, from wherethey were discharged after first aid.
