Bengal govt flayed for inaction to trace abducted persons

Kolkata, Feb 22 (PTI) In the backdrop of Orissaadministration''s prompt steps to secure the release of twoabducted government officials, West Bengal Government''sapparent inaction to trace a kidnapped police officer and aschool teacher even four months after their abduction comes infor sharp criticism from several quarters.

IB officer Partha Biswas and school teacher SoumyojitBasu were abducted from Ayodhya hills in Purulia district onOctober 23 and they remain untraced till today.

"West Bengal Government''s attitude is callous and they donot even try to find out what has happened to the IB officerand the school teacher," social activist Swami Agnivesh toldPTI.

"Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik''s approach toensure early and safe release of Malkangiri Collector R VKrishna and junior engineer Pabitra Kumar Majhi wascreditable," he said.

Blaming the Bengal Government for its failure to locatethe IB officer and the school teacher, Soumyojit''s brotherAvijit Basu said, "We met all senior government officersbesides Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and TrinamoolCongress chief Mamata Banerjee, but none has assured usanything.

"When we met DGP Naparajit Mukherjee, he said police donot have any clue to the whereabouts of the abducted personsand asked us to share information so that police could act onit."

Although Maoists disowned their role in the abductionand alleged that the two men were victims of policeinfighting, Basu said, "The day they went missing someonecalled us from my brother''s mobile and, identifying himself asa Maoist, claimed that they had abducted Soumyojit. Weinformed this to police, but since then there has been noprogress and we don''t know whether they are now alive". MOREPTI SAG PR MM

A senior police officer said today, "We don''t have any information about the abducted persons till date. We spoke tothe neighbouring states, but so far there has been no positivefeedback."

Dandapani Mohanty, an interlocutor, said "The OrissaGovernment has been very positive in their response and thiswill build confidence among the people and we are working hardto ensure the safe release of the abducted officials".

The chances of the safe release of the abducted Collectorand junior engineer in Orissa were high, Mohanty said.

The Malkangiri Collector and the junior engineer wereabducted by Maoists when they were going to attend adevelopment camp under Chitrakonda police station area inMalkangiri district of Orissa on February 16.
