UP govt to set up ''study seat'' after poet ''Firaq Gorakhpuri''

Lucknow, Feb 17 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government hasdecided to set up a ''study seat'' in the name of renowned Urdupoet and academician Raghupati Sahay ''Firaq Gorakhpuri'' inGorakhpur University, Higher Education minister Rakesh DharTripathi said today.

An announcement in this regard was made by theminister in the Assembly during a debate on the amendment billfor renaming UP Urdu Arabic University as Manyavar KanshiramUrdu Arabic University.

The bill was passed by the Assembly by voice vote.

Earlier, Hukkum Singh and Radha Mohan Agarwal of BJPdemanded that if the University is to be renamed, it should benamed after Mirza Galib or Firaq, who had made greatcontribution towards Urdu literature, sources said.

Though the minister did not concede to the demand ofthe BJP members, he announced the setting up of the seat whileacknowledging the contribution of Firaq in Urdu literature,the sources said.
