NSDL appointed Registrar for UID

Mumbai, Feb 18 (PTI) The National Securities DepositoryLimited (NSDL), today said that it has been appointed as aRegistrar by the Unique Identification Authority of India(UIDAI) for implementation the UID mission.

NSDL is the largest depository in India serving more thanone-crore investors and ranks amongst the top ten depositoriesin the world in terms of assets in custody.

The Registrar is required to enrol residents followingthe protocols, standards, processes and guidelines laid downby the UIDAI.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by NSDLand UIDAI for appointing NSDL as Registrar. It was signed byUIDAI''s Deputy Director General, B B Nanawati and NSDL''sExecutive Director, Jayesh Sule.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)has been created as an attached office under the PlanningCommission.

Its role is to develop and implement the necessaryinstitutional, technical and legal infrastructure to issueunique identity numbers to Indian residents that can beverified and authenticated in an online, cost-effective mannerand which is robust enough to eliminate duplicate and fakeidentities.

Over five-years, the Authority plans to issue 600million UIDs. The numbers will be issued through various''Registrar'' agencies across the country.
