JK to ask funds from Centre for survey

Jammu, Feb 12 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir government willseek funds from the Central government to undertake a surveyof physically challenged persons in the state, officials heresaid today.

"The Social Welfare Department will soon forward acomprehensive proposal to the Central government for securingnecessary funds to undertake a survey of all physicallychallenged persons in the state," Minister for Social WelfareSakina Itoo said after a meeting with Governor N N Vohraat Rajbhawan here yesterday.

The minister said that the survey would help the stategovernment plan and implement intervention programmes for thephysically challenged.

Officials are also mulling to train Anganwari workers toconduct the survey with the help of the state healthdepartment, she said.

Among other things, the exercise will include finding thenumber of physically challenged persons who have been providedemployment in 2010 under the state government''s reservationfor the category.

Besides, raising the need for conducting census ofphysically challenged in the state, Sakina said that she alsotold the Governor that implementation of the stategovernment''s welfare policy for these people must be ensured.

Governor Vohra, on his part, emphasised that specialattention must be paid to health care and education facilitiesof the physically challenged, adding that the implementationof programmes and policies aimed at their welfare requireconstant review and monitoring.
