Motorists banned from parking on Pamban Bridge
Rameswaram, Jan 31 (PTI) Police said they have issuedstrict instructions to motorists not to park their vehicles onthe Pamban Bridge, which connects this island to mainlandIndia, as the 23 year old structure has become weak.
Travelers stopping over at the bridge to enjoy the seabreeze or the scenery is a common sight but DIG of Police,Amalraj, has ordered that the practice must be discontinued,police said.
According to K Sadhasivam, a former engineer with theGovernment of India, the structure has not undergone majorrenovation since being inaugurated in 1988 apart for beingrepainted.
Besides, as the bridge is located in one of the highestcorrosive areas in the world, there is a need to undertakemaintenance work at least every three years, he said. PTICorr/SSN ARP
