Karuna meets PM, discusses fishermen issue
New Delhi, Jan 31 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MKarunanidhi today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here andis understood to have raised the issue of Indian fishermenbeing killed allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy.
Karunanidhi, who arrived here yesterday on a three-dayvisit, met Singh at his 7, Race Course Road residence and isbelieved to have asked the Prime Minister to tell Colombo notto resort to firing at fishermen who cross the InternationalMaritime Border.
Karunanidhi also discussed the ensuing Assembly pollsin Tamil Nadu and the seat-sharing mechanism between the DMKand Congress, DMK sources said.
He is also scheduled to meet Congress chief SoniaGandhi.
The Chief Minister had yesterday told reporters thathe would discuss the fishermen attack issue with the PrimeMinister.
"I have been discussing the fishermen issue with Singhon several occasions," he had said yesterday indicating thathe would take up the issue with the prime minister again.
The meeting comes at a time when Foreign SecretaryNirupama Rao is in Colombo to take up the issue with SriLanka.
Rao was asked by External Affairs Minister S M Krishnato travel to Colombo to discuss with the Sri Lankan governmentthe killing of Indian fishermen.
Reflecting the political sensitivities in Tamil Nadu,India has already reacted very strongly to the incidents inwhich two Indian fishermen were killed in the span of onemonth, notwithstanding Sri Lankan government''s claim that itsnavy was not involved.
