Central registration of marriages important: Canadian MP

Moga, Jan 15 (PTI) A Canadian MP of Indian origin hassaid fraud marriages confronting Indians have emerged as aserious issue and demanded a system of central registration ofmarriages and verification of antecedents of those gettingmarried.

Ruby Dhalla, who arrived here on the invitation of LokBhalai Party Chairman BS Ramuwalia yesterday, said she met 50women who have been deceived by the NRIs after marriage andassured them of all possible help.

She said she would take up the matter of fraudulentmarriages in the Canadian Parliament.

Dhalla also stated that she had been pressing both theCanadian and India governments to put in place some laws orlegal mechanism to check or prevent exploitation of theinstitution of marriage for fraudulent immigration orexploitation of spouses, especially the girl.

In Jalandhar district today, Dhalla donated Rs ten lakhto the Government Senior Secondary Girls'' school in BastiShekh area and said she has given this amount for betterdevelopment of the institution, officials said.
