Cong welcomes permission to CBI to reinvestigate Malegaon case

New Delhi, Jan 13 (PTI) Congress today welcomed a specialcourt''s permission to CBI to reinvestigate the Malegaon blastof 2006 in wake of "confession" statements made by SwamiAseemanand linking Hindu groups to terror acts.

"It is very good. We welcome it," party General SecretaryDigvijay Singh told reporters when asked to comment on theorder of the Special MCOCA court in Mumbai on the blast thatleft 37 people dead and over 100 injured.

Asserting that Congress does not believe in saffronterror, he said that anyone guilty of terror activities neededto be punished.

Referring to RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat''s remarks, he askedas to why he did not inform the CBI when he was aware of thepresence of "doubtful elements" in the organisation.

"I only want to say that in case Bhagwat had informationabout such doubtful elements why he did not inform the policeor the CBI about them," Digvijay said.

The RSS chief on Sunday had admitted in Gujarat that someof its members, who held radical views, were told to leave theorganisation.

Singh said even now, if there were some "suspicious"elements in the RSS, it was Bhagwat''s duty to tell the policeor the investigating authorities about them.

The senior Congress leader asserted that time had come forBJP and RSS to introspect and find out "as to why unwantedelements had become associated with the Sangh Parivar."

At a public meeting in Surat, Bhagwat had said, "Of themajority of the people whom the government has accused (invarious blast cases), a few have left voluntarily and a few(have been) told by the Sangh... this extremism will not workhere, so you go away."

Asked whether the Muslim youth who have been arrested inconnection with the Malegaon blasts should now be freed in thewake of the disclosures of Aseemanand, he said that it was forthe investigate agencies to look into the matter and "we willnot like to interfere".

"If there is no case against them, certainly they shouldbe freed," he said.

On the issue of security to Rahul Gandhi who faced somedemonstrations in Uttar Pradesh, Singh, who is in charge ofparty affairs in the state, said, "The SPG is responsible forthe security of the VVIP and the state police is taken intoconfidence by the SPG so that the life of the VVIP isprotected."
