Municipal polls will affect Meghalaya locals: organisations
Shillong, Jan 13 (PTI) Eleven organisations today saidthe planned municipal elections in Meghalaya will affect thelocal tribespeople.
In a joint representation to Chief Minister MukulSangma, Joint Action Committee Against Municipality said themunicipal elections will "adversely affect the indigenouspeople".
The organisations sought cancellation of the electionsfor Jowai Municipal Board scheduled to be held on February 15.
Reminding the protests that erupted after thegovernment tried to hold the elections in the fourmunicipalities of Garo hills last year, the committee urgedthe government to abandon its plans to hold the civic polls inthe state.
Ever since statehood in 1972, Meghalaya has neverconducted civic polls.
