Governor summons chief secretary to discuss law and order
Kolkata, Jan 13 (PTI) West Bengal Governor M K Narayanantoday summoned state chief secretary, Samar Ghosh, to discussthe law and order situation in the wake of the recent spurt inpolitical violence, particularly the killing of sevenvillagers in West Midnapore district on January 7.
Ghosh was accompanied by state Home secretary G D Gautamaand DGP N Mukherjee, Raj Bhavan sources said.
The Governor had in a statement on the day of the killingexpressed anguish at the deterioration of law and ordersituation and asked the government to act decisively before itwas too late.
"This has gone on for far too long. It is incumbent uponthe authorities to act decisively to preempt or quell attemptsat violence, irrespective of the affiliations of the groupsinvolved. A decisive stage has been reached for the Governmentto act, before it becomes a point of no return," he said.
"No democracy can allow such violence: no civilisedsociety can tolerate such wanton disregard for human lives andno state can accept such mindless discord," the statementsaid.
Last week, Narayanan had said on the sidelines of aprogramme at Shibpur in Howrah district that he would alsolike to discuss the law and order situation with the chiefminister.
