AMU seeks heightened security in campus

Aligarh, Jan 12 (PTI) The Aligarh Muslim Universityauthorities have urged Uttar Pradesh government to takenecessary steps for tightening security in the campus in thewake of media reports suggesting that AMU is one of the softtargets of some ultra right wing Hindu groups.

In a letter to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary, AMU ViceChancellor P K Abdul Aziz has sought urgent implementation ofa security plan following recent revelations made by SwamiAseemanand, arrested for his alleged involvement in SamjhautaExpress blasts of 2007, in his confessions.

An AMU spokesman told newspersons today that theUniversity authorities have taken this matter seriously andall AMU students and staff members have been directed to carrytheir identity cards which are liable to be checked at allsensitive points inside the campus.

The district authorities have also been alerted to helpensure a check on all unauthorized persons within theUniversity campus.

The spokesman said the Aligarh Muslim University is oneof the country�s premier institutions of higher learning and a"symbol of the country�s unity and secular values".

The University was determined to play its due role in thetask of nation-building and would not allow any section orgroup to damage the country�s "unity and integrity", he said.
