Telangana: Schools & colleges remain close

Hyderabad, Jan 7: Schools and colleges remained closed at many places in Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh on Friday, Jan 7. Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) called for a shutdown of educational institute in the region to protest alleged lathicharge on students at Osmania University in Hyderabad.

After Srikrishna committee report was made public the students of Osmania University turned violent and engaged in stone pelting and burned a city bus that made the situation in Hyderabad volatile and sensitive. Students also caused bodily harm to police personnel stationed during the agitation.

JAC called for a general bandh (Strike) on Friday, to protest against the the alleged police action on the university students on Thursday. The students were agitating against the Srikrishna committee report over the statehood issue.

Life remained unaffected in Hyderabad and other places in Telangana and no reports of any untoward incident were received. Commercial establishments were open and public transport buses were running on schedule.

The JAC also asked the govt employees in Telangana region to exercise lunch hour protest in their office on Friday, in the support of the demand for introduction of a bill for formation of separate Telangana state in the budget session of the Parliament.
