Heavy rains in Chennai claim 170 lives

Heavy rainfalls have caused extensive damage to standing crops, roads and other infrastructure facilities as well.
Chennai: Rain continues, death toll reaches 150
More than 150 people were killed in heavy rains in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, Dec 5.
The low pressure trough in the Bay of Bengal created heavy rains and flood like situation in Tamil Nadu. The weather department said that the rain will continue on Monday, Dec 6 as a fresh low pressure trough has formed in Bay of Bengal.
Government officials said that schools and educational institutions in Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Trichy and in some other affected areas will remain closed on Monday.
Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea as heavy rain expected in coming hours. The death toll is expected to increase. Most of the death were due to electrocution, wall collapses, lightning and drowning in flood waters.
