Bhopal tragedy: Day of remembrance

Bhopal, Dec 3: One of the biggest tragedy in India is the Bhopal gas tragedy in Madhya Pradesh and is the world's worst industrial disaster. The night of Dec 3, 1984 this catastrophe took place.

Dec 3, 2010, is 26th anniversary of Bhopal tragedy. A leak of vicious methyl isocyanate gas and other chemicals from the plant ended up the life of thousands of people, the death toll was very high in this calamity.

The immediate death count from government of Madhya pradesh was 2259, later it confirmed the number of 3787 deaths caused by gas leak. Other government agencies estimated 15000 deaths and 3000 died within a weeks time.A government legal document depicted the leak caused 558,125 injuries including 38,478 temporary partial, and approximately 3900 people gravely injured.

Civil and criminal case are pending in the United States District Courts and the District Court of Bhopal. Till now 15 former employees were convicted including chairman and they were sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment and $2000 dollars as fine for causing death by negligence in Bhopal, the judgment was passed on June, 2010, in that convicted ex-employees 2 employees died before the judgment.

However, the awful and traumatic disaster stays in our memory.
