Congress split over AFSPA withdrawal in JK

Congress
New Delhi, Sep 11: The government's planned Eid gift to the troubled state of Jammu Kashmir seems to have hit a hurdle as reports of differences cropping in top Congress leaders on the withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) emerge.

Quoting sources several media reports state that the Congress core group, which met here on Friday, Sep 10, was split over the withdrawal of the controversial AFSPA as leaders aired divergent views.

The party's apex decision-making body, which held discussions over the issue for over 90 minutes, felt that the problems in the State could not be resolved merely by withdrawing the AFSPA.

Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh were also present at the meet, which ended on a indecisive note and could, therefore, affect the outcome of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meet on Saturday, Sep 11.
