4.4-magnitude earthquake hits Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Sep 2: A 4.4-magnitude earthquake hit Gujrat's Patan on Thursday, Sep 2 morning.

“An earthquake was experienced between 8:39 to 8:45 am close to Verana village in Patan," District Collector Patan A G Hingrajia told a news agency.

The epicentre of the earthquake was 30 kilometre North East of Radhanpur taluka in the district, it was at a latitude of 23.849 and longitude of 71.915, said a senior scientist at the Institute of Seismological Research.

The tremor was felt by the locals in Verana village, where the officials have reached right now.

So far there have been no reports on damage or casualty.

A massive earthquake measuring between 7.6 and 8.1 in magnitude on the Richter scale hit Gujarat on Jan 26, 2001, which also happened to be India's 51st Republic Day.

The epicentre was Bhuj and the quake came to be known as the Bhuj earthquake, in which around 20,000 people were killed, over 167,000 were injured and nearly 400,000 homes were destroyed.
