NAC to consider food security proposals today
New Delhi, Aug 30 (ANI): The National Advisory Council (NAC) headed by Congress President Sonia Gandhi will meet here today to firm up its stand with regard to the proposed National Food Security Act.
The meet will also deliberate on the availability of food grain storage and the state of the Public Distribution System (PDS).
The NAC is expected to resolve two key questions, the number of people who will get rice and wheat for three rupees per kg and fixing the price of food grains for people living below the poverty line.
The NAC in its last meeting was of the view that all vulnerable, needy and poor sections of society ought to become an integral part of the scheme.
On July 14, the NAC had recommended distribution of subsidised food grains to everyone in at least 200 most disadvantaged districts across the country by April next year.
Earlier, Sonia Gandhi had sought improvements in the draft bill cleared by an Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM).
The Bill seeks to provide legal right to the poor to get rice or wheat at Rs. three per kilogram.
The 14-member NAC was re-constituted on June 1 and is expected to advise the Government on various programmes. (ANI)
