Officials nabbed while taking bribe in TN

Chennai, Jul 15: More than Rs 25 lakh in cash, 19 bank pass books, foreign currency and documents relating to immovable property were found from the residence of a top Tamil Nadu Electricity Board official, in a surprise raid.

Identified as N Seenivasagan, 55, chief engineer, at Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, was arrested along with his executive engineer Madhusoodan, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to revoke the suspension of an assistant engineer.

He was trapped by a DVAC team led by M B Natarajan and S Thirunavukarasu, after assistant executive engineer, Selvam filed a complaint, alleging that the duo demanded Rs 4 lakh when he pleaded for revocation of his suspension.

Ironically, Selvam had been placed under suspension on charges of bribery about 15 days ago.

Srinivasagan, was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 2 lakh. Further, a three hour search at his residence in West Mambalam yielded Rs 22 lakh in cash.

"We found the money kept hidden in a bag in the bed box," the officer said.

The team also seized 34 documents pertaining to immovable property and about 20 bank accounts in the name of his family members and 740 Singapore dollars. Now police is waiting to question Srinivasagan's wife Parameswari.

The two arrested engineers were remanded to judicial custody for 15 days.
