New Delhi, Jul 13: The Supreme Court on Tuesday, Jul 13 directed the Maharashtra government to extend the best of five system, which it proposed specifically for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Board students, to the students of the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) board as well.

The apex court's order came in response to a petition filed the state government challenging the Jun 23 Bombay High Court order striking down the 'best of five' formula citing that it violated the constitutional equality and discriminated against the students studying under ICSE and CBSE board students.

The government formulated the 'best five' system in Jan 2010, under which marks of five out of six subjects of the SSC students was to be considered for the Class 11 admissions.

The state had mooted this system as it found that the SSC board students scored lower than the students of other boards as ICSE and CBSE board's valuation was much more liberal than the SSC valuation system.
