Family hacks girl's lover to death in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Jul 7: Indicating that distressing social evil of honour killing is not just a North Indian phenomenon, a suspected case of honour killing has emerged from Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga district where family members of a girl killed the boy she eloped with.

About a month ago, 18-year-old Menaka eloped with her lover after she was forced to marry a man identified as Kalidoos. The family tracked down the girl and her 24-year-old lover, Sivakumar living near a village near Manamadurai town and brought them back to Sivaganga, where Sivakumar was hacked to death on Tuesday, Jul 6.

Menaka, however, managed to escape death but sustained serious injuries. Police sources revealed that the girl was admitted to government hospital at Madurai where her condition was stated to be serious.

The police does not think the killing was over the issue of caste as both the girl and the boy belonged to the same Ahamudiar community. The family of the girl was only moved to take the extreme step as they disliked the boy.
