GOM meets over caste census

New Delhi, Jul 1: The crucial meeting about the consideration of caste in census will be held on Thursday,Jul 1.

The meeting will be headed by various Group of Ministers including Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Several political parties, including the Samajwadi Party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Janata Dal (United), have been pressing for inclusion of caste in the census.

Other members of the GoM are Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah, Urban Housing Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Dr Manmohan Singh has assured Parliament that the government would take the views of the members into account before deciding on the matter.
