Duronto passengers suffer food poisoning

Thiruvananthapuram, May 18: Atleast 21 passengers including five kids of Ernakulam- Hazrat Nizamuddin Duronto Express were hospitalized for suspected food poisoning after they had breakfast in the train.

One among the passengers, who got admitted to Kozhikode Beach Hospital told the media that they fell ill after having bread and omlette, served around 10 am on May 17, Monday morning.

The non-stop train had to stop at Kozhikode around 11.40 am as the passengers complained of vomiting and diarrhea. Some among the passengers also fainted and doctors say that their condition were stated to be out of danger.

The passengers also alleged laxity by the railways in providing basic medical treatment and said that the Duty Doctor had adopted a 'casual approach'.

There were also problems with the dinner served on Sunday, May 16. The passangers also complained that they did not have drinking water facility.

E Ahmed, the Union Minister of State for Railways, who visited the affected in the hospital has announced a compensation of Rs 15,000 to those affected. He has also ordered an inquiry.
