Police baton charge Congress, BJP activists in Ujjain
Ujjain, May 9 (ANI): Activists of both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were baton charged by police at Ujjain on Saturday.
This incident took place when they indulged in fisticuffs and almost rioting over the laying of the foundation stone for the Mahakal Dwar, a gateway to the city.
The bone of contention arose since the mayor happened to be from the Congress party, whereas the legislator was from the BJP.
BJP activists argued that the credit and the privilege to lay the foundation stone ought to have been in the name of the legislator and not the mayor.
"The Mayor belonging to the Congress party was trying to encroach upon the rights of the member of the state assembly from this city. The mayor was illegally trying to lay the foundation stone of the Mahakal Dwar. This is highly condemnable," said Devesh Maheshwari, a BJP functionary. (ANI)
