Government to bring legislation to avoid custodial deaths
New Delhi, May 5 (ANI): The Government has plans to make a legislation, which would act as a deterrent for Public Servants from indulging in custodial deaths and abuse of power by police authorities.
Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Maken on Wednesday in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha said, "A Bill titled "The Prevention of Torture Bill, 2010" was introduced in the Lok Sabha on April 26 in this regard."
"The Bill provides for punishment to those involved in the incident of torture and specifies the time limit for taking cognizance of the offence of torture," he added.
"The custodial death recorded for the year 2007-2008 was reported to be 2267. For 2008-2009, it was reported to be 1943 and for 2009-2010, the number of custodial deaths is reported to be 1794," reported the Government to the National Human Rights Commission (ANI)
