Khap leaders protest verdict in honour killing
Kurukshetra, Apr 13: The Khap panchayats or caste councils on Tuesday, Apr 13, met here to protest the recent of conviction of six people in honour killing of a couple.
A Karnal court had sentenced five people to death and one to life imprisonment for killing Manoj and Babli who had married despite belonging to the same gotra.
Hundreds of Khap leaders from Punjab and Haryana are attending the Maha Khap Panchayat and have also decided to challenge the court verdict in the case.
They even sought an amendment in the Hindu Marriage Act seeking a ban on marriages within the same 'gotra' or subcaste.
The Khap leaders decided to proceed to National Highway linking Delhi with important north Indian cities like Chandigarh and Ambala to block the road to protest the verdict.
"We will help the killers of the couple (Manoj-Babi). We have decided to give an ultimatum to the respective governments for making amendments in the Hindu Marriage Act so that marriages in the same clan or gotra can be prevented," said Abhay Ram, Khap President.
The Panchayat members will also be raising funds for the six recently convicted men.
