K'taka civil defence awarded with Golden Peacock

Bangalore, Jan 22: The prestigious Golden Peacock Award for 2010 was given to the Karnataka Home Guards and Civil Defencen recognition of its dedicated service to the people of the state and humanity at large.

Instituted by World Council For Corporate Governance and Institute of Directors, the international award is conferred upon individuals or organisations for excellence in various fields such as innovation, quality, and corporate social responsibility.

The year's awardees also included Tata Consultancy Services, ONGC, Reliance Infrastructure, SAIL, Mahindra and Mahindra, L&T Electric Standard Products, Birla Sun Life Asset Management Company, Titan Industries Ltd, Jindal Steel and Power, and Mazagon Docks.

At Jan 16 award ceremony, held at the The Lalit Ashok Hotel here, the Golden Peacock was presented to the Home Guards and Civil Defence by Minister Ramachandra Gowda in the presence of who is who of the corporate world.

The award ceremony was scheduled during the three day corporate Governance Summit and 20th World Congress on Total Quality between 15 to 17 Jan, 2010.

Besides having the chance to listen to several high profile speakers on various topics, the students of Corporate Governance and Quality Assurance were treated with a paper presentation by Dr Jija Madhavan Harisingh, IPS, Director General of Police, Commandant General, Home Guards, Director, Civil Defence and Director General, Fire and Emergency Services.

After pointing out the differences between the corporate way of problem solving and the Civil defence way of doing things, Dr Jija established that Civil Defence can effectively wipe out terrorism by supporting his argument with the instance of the US plane blast terror plot which was foiled by an ordinary civilian.
