Centre lifts ban on prepaid mobile in JK

New Delhi: The prepaid mobile phones ban in Jammu Kashmir has been lifted by the Centre on Thursday, Jan 21.

According to officials sources, the decision was taken after the Centre finalised a "foolproof" plan to ensure proper verification of nearly 38 lakh cell phone subscribers in the state.

Recently, Home Minister P Chidambaram had said, "If the service providers come up with a foolproof plan of 100 per cent verification and the ministry was satisfied with it, then the issue may be revisited."

The Union home ministry had imposed the ban on pre-paid mobile phone services due to security reasons on Nov 1, 2009.
