Delivery of stem cells leads to improved bone formation
Washington, Jan 12 (ANI): A new American study has found that transporting stem cells on a polymer scaffold can help in improved bone formation.
Researchers led by Robert Guldberg, a professor at Georgia Tech's Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, experimented on mice to come up with their findings.
Guldberg said: "Massive bone injuries are among the most challenging problems that orthopedic surgeons face, and they are commonly seen as a result of accidents as well as in soldiers returning from war.
"This study shows that there is promise in treating these injuries by delivering stem cells to the injury site. These are injuries that would not heal without significant medical intervention."
The study has appeared in the early edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on January 11, 2010. (ANI)
