Kartika Reddy becomes Hyderabad's 1st woman mayor

Hyderabad, Dec 4: Elected unopposed as the mayor of Hyderabad, Banda Kartika Reddy scripted history by becoming the first woman to ever hold the seat.

The Congress candidate, who is also the first mayor of Greater Hyderabad, was elected as corporator from Tarnaka division in Nov 2009 elections.

Jaffer Hussain Meraj of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) was elected as the deputy mayor without a contest.

While the ruling party and MIM have reached an agreement over power-sharing in the civic body, opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and other parties did not field a candidatem leading to presiding officer and Hyderabad District Collector Naveen Mittal declaring Kartika and Jaffer elected unopposed.

The election took place at at the first meeting of newly-elected corporators and ex-officio members (MPs and legislators) of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Friday, Dec 4.
