Attempt to rape case filed against Goan politician

Pananji, Dec 3: A Russian tourist has reportedly accused an aspiring Goan politican of attempting to rape her after offering a lift in his car on Tuesday, Dec 1 night.

The 25-year-old woman filed a case at the Colva police station on Wednesday, Dec 3 against John Fernandes a member of a local political party, prompting the police to book an attempt to rape case against him.

The Russian woman, who came to Goa on a vacation, claims that Fernandes promised to drop her to the hotel, but instead took her to a lonely spot and tried to rape her. She said that she managed to wrest free and fled back the htel in Colva where she is staying.

"We have not been able to trace him yet. Investigations are on," an official at the Colva police station said.

34-year-old Fernandes, who lost to Tourism Minister Francisco in the state assembly elections, has been booked under sections 376 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code.
