Left stagnating India's economic reform: PM

Washington, Nov 30: In a sharp response to criticism on slow economic reform, prime minister Manmohan singh said that reforms cannot be produced like rabbits from hats but must be in correspondence with the country's political climate.

"I think we cannot produce the reforms like rabbits out of a hat. Reforms have to respond to the political climate, what is saleable, what I can sell to our coalition partners," Singh said in a television interview.

Blaming the Left for being an obstacle in the nation's progress, Singh said that Congress had achieved a major chunk of the reform in its first tenure from '91 to '96, adding that the government is now focusing on improvement in public sector.
