Muslim board unhappy with Liberhan report
New Delhi, Nov 28: The clean chit given to former Prime Minister PV Narsimha Rao by the Liberhan Commission in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case has invited a strong reaction from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, which has termed it a 'mockery of sorts'.
Questioning the 'unfortunate' observations made in the document on Muslim organisations, senior member of the Board, Maulana Khalid Rashid Firnagimahal, said, “The report states that the Board and Muslim organisations did not put forth their stand on the Babri mosque and did little for the rehabilitation of the riot victims."
He went on to say that the Commission should have appreciated the Muslim bodies for stopping the Muslim people from taking to the streets which could have aggravated the situation.
“By controlling the Muslim masses, an effort was made to keep the atmosphere of fear under check," he said.
Even thought rehabilitation was government's responsibility, the Muslim organisations went out and helped out not only Muslims but also Hindus, Firnagimahal claimed.
The Muslim leader, who is also Lucknow"s Naib Imam, also found it 'strange' that Liberhan report doesn't prescribe a quantum of punishment for those responsible for the “killing of 2000 people during the post-Babri riots".
