Indian Army launches green drive in Sikkim

Gangtok, Sep 24 (ANI): The Indian Army has launched an afforestation drive in the high altitude area of East Sikkim on Wednesday.

A total of 6000 saplings have been planted in the area which includes various species like Sikkim fir, maple juniper, chinguapin, English lac, rhododendron, purple Iris, Jatamansi, Strawberry and fenugreek.

General Officer Commanding of the Black Cat Division, Major General R.S. Chopra, planted a sapling to mark the launching of the green drive.

Speaking on the occasion Major General R.S. Chopra said, "Our commitment and concern towards the cause of environment has been again emphasised by the current afforestation drive undertaken by the unit in this high altitude region"

Indian Council of Agricultural Research Deputy Director (ICAR) Rehman praised the drive and the enthusiasm of the Army personnel in making Sikkim green and adding to its natural beauty. (ANI)
